Is Environmental Literacy dead in the water?
Literacy is a prerequisite to environmental literacy. In 2001, a UNESCO report revealed that approximately 1 billion adults are non-literate. That’s 26 percent of the world’s adult population. In April 2013, a U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy study concluded that 32 million adults in the U.S. can’t read. That’s 14 percent of the US population. There is clearly room to improve literacy rates in general, and environmental literacy in particular. Hopefully, the proliferation of Internet access and its audio/video capabilities can help. HLEAC believes in the power of the Internet, and invites you to contribute to HLEAC.org.
